About the Author
J. R. R. Tolkien was born John Ronald Reuel Tolkien in South Africa in 1892 and died at age 81 in 1973. His father died when he was three years old, so he spent much of his childhood being cared for by his mother and other relatives until he moved to England with them when he was eight. There, he discovered books about myths and legends, which inspired him to write his own stories about dragons, elves, dwarves, and other magical creatures who lived in Middle Earth (a fictional land). He had many jobs during his lifetime but none as important as being an author—he wrote more than 20 books, including The Hobbit (1937), The Lord of the Rings (1954-55), Farmer Giles of Ham (1949), and others.
